What We Found Auditing 54 Small Business Websites in Santa Fe

Joshua R. Gutierrez6 min read

We ran 54 Santa Fe small business websites through DeepAudit, and they were the strongest set we measured anywhere in New Mexico. Median 76 out of 100, with 31 of the 54 in the good tier. In a town of galleries, fine dining, and design-conscious hospitality, that tracks. People here care how things look.

Which makes the next number the interesting one.

The best-looking sites still lock out keyboard users

81.5 percent of Santa Fe sites failed on focus indicators, the highest rate of any city we audited, including the markets with far uglier websites. Accessibility overall failed on 98 percent of sites and averaged 50 out of 100. The lesson is uncomfortable: a site can be beautiful and still be unusable for someone navigating by keyboard or screen reader. Design and accessibility are not the same thing, and Santa Fe is the clearest proof of it. For a tourist and second-home audience that skews older, that is not abstract.

A high-intent audience, half-served

Santa Fe sells to people who research before they arrive. And the technical layer that decides whether they find you is thin. 64.8 percent of sites were missing llms.txt, so the AI assistants planning someone's trip do not know the business exists. 64.8 percent had little domain authority, 53.7 percent had H1 problems, half had thin content, and 46.3 percent had HTML validation errors. The audience is affluent and high-intent. The sites are leaving the last mile on the table.

What it means for a Santa Fe business

Santa Fe does not need to fix its design. It needs to fix what is behind the design: accessibility, AI readiness, and the technical foundation that decides whether a beautiful gallery, restaurant, or boutique-hotel site actually gets found and actually converts the visitor who was always going to spend money. The bar is higher here than in the rest of the state, but the gaps are real and almost entirely invisible to the owner.
